  74.    GETTING STARTED
  75.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  76.    The information provided below is to help you start the program for 
  77.    your hardware configuration.  For more details about the operation of 
  78.    the program press the F1 (function) key once you have started the 
  79.    program.

  81.    The following files are absolutely essential to run AS-EASY-AS:
  82.  
  83.    ASEASY.EXE  ASEASY.MSG  ASEASY.MNU          
  84.  
  85.    These three files need to reside in the same sub-directory.  In 
  86.    addition to that, if the files ASEASY.HLP, ASEASY.PRT, ASEASY.CFG, 
  87.    HTREE.EXE, and any Addins, are going to be used, they HAVE to reside 
  88.    in the same (ASEASY) directory as well.

  91.     AS-EASY-AS is started from DOS using the command:

  100.                 command compatibility with version 4.00 of AS-EASY-AS.

  103.     /AUTO=File... - Specify the worksheet to be loaded
  104.                      when the program is started
  105.     /BK=x    - Set screen blank-out period to x seconds
  106.     /BM      - Bypass Mono Detection Scheme

  121.     /NW      - Use Nth bin model rather than Nth+1 (default)
  122.     /Q       - Quick screen updating for CGA
  123.     /RA      - Round Absolute (e.g. 1.6 to 2., -1.6 to -2.)
  124.     /UK      _ Set the currency to £ and @DATE to DD/MM/YY
  125.     /VM=nnn  - Use Virtual (disk) EMS model, nnn-Pages (4k each)
  126.     /VP=Path - Set Path for Virtual (disk) memory File 
  127.     /V1      - Force CGA Emulation (normally on VGA Monitor)

  130.      A> ASEASY /H2/DIR=C:\Data [ENTER]
  131.      Starts AS-EASY-AS for a Hercules type monitor, using the second 
  132.      page for graphics, and instructs the program that the data files 
  133.      will be located on drive C, in subdirectory "Data".

  169.    To Install on Floppy or Hard Disk:  
  170.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  171.    Although the program will work if installed on 360k diskettes, we 
  172.    recommend that the program is installed either on a hard disk, or a 
  173.    high density floppy diskette, since this will permit the help file, 
  174.    the printer setup files, and other auxiliary files, to be available 
  175.    to the user without swapping disks.  If installing on 360k disks, you 
  176.    need a minimum of 2 - 360 drives, e.g., A and B. 
  177.  
  178.   * Place the AS-EASY-AS original diskette in drive A: (or B:)
  179.  
  180.   * Make sure the current logged drive is A: (Type A:, or B:, and 
  181.     press ENTER, if it is not).
  182.   
  183.   * Type INSTALL and press [ENTER].  Then, follow the simple on-screen 
  184.     instructions to install your copy of the program on the desired disk(s) 
  185.     and/or subdirectory.

  187.      If you are experiencing difficulties with the installation program
  188.      you can try to manually install the program from DOS.  To do so, 
  189.      for example, place the original disk in drive A, log onto the 
  190.      drive and/or directory that you want to install the program, type     
  191.  
  192.        A:LHA e A:ASEASY5.FLS   and press ENTER.  
  193.        
  194.      NOTE: If you are trying to extract the files on 360K diskettes, 
  195.            you will need more than one diskette!

  198.    On-Disk Documentation
  199.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  200.    The installation process extracts a file called ASEASY.MAN.  This is a 
  201.    ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.  
  202.  
  203.    Following the installation, make sure that the ASEASY.MAN file is 
  204.    indeed on your default directory.  Then, to print this manual: 
  205.  
  206.    (1)  Make sure that the your printer is ON  and there is enough 
  207.         paper in it (the manual is about 102 pages).
  208.  
  209.    (2)  From the DOS prompt, type
  210.  
  211.         COPY ASEASY.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
  212.  
  213.         Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
  214.         then you need to use the command  COPY ASEASY.MAN COM1, or
  215.         COPY ASEASY.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your 
  216.         printer is connected to).

  220.    New Features and Main modifications in Ver 5.01a to 5.01c
  221.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  222.    A number of new features have been incorporated in Version 5.01 of 
  223.    AS-EASY-AS.  Many have already been documented in the ASEASY.MAN 
  224.    (the on-disk user's manual) file.  A brief description of the new 
  225.    features and modifications that did not make it in the manual are 
  226.    presented below: 
  227.  
  228.   <A> The EMS/VM module of the program was completely overhauled.  
  229.       A new, proprietary technique, developed by TRIUS, continuously 
  230.       performs an intelligent allocation of the Conventional/Expanded 
  231.       memory pool.  The end result is the capability to load worksheets 
  232.       up to 10 times larger that with version 5.00 (provided the user 
  233.       has enough EMS). 
  234.  
  235.       The maximum amount of VM (virtual disk memory) that may now be 
  236.       used by AS-EASY-AS was increased from about 400k to 2000k.  
  237.  
  238.       An increase in speed was achieved in version 5.01, by going from 2k 
  239.       EMS/VM pages to 4k pages.  In particular users with VM applications 
  240.       should welcome this speed increase. 
  241.  
  242.  <B>  A new command was introduced; Range, Copy, Formula.  This command 
  243.       will copy cell containing formulas, while maintaining the original 
  244.       formula references (/CopyCell translates the formula references). 
  245.  
  246.  <C>  A new parameter was introduced in the /Sheet, Text, Find/Replace 
  247.       command.  In addition to the PU options, a new option, R, if 
  248.       specified, will now prompt the user to specify the range upon which 
  249.       the Find/Replace command is to operate.  
  250.  
  251.  <D>  A new option is now available under the User, Install menu, the 
  252.       CMdStr command.  When this command is selected, the user is 
  253.       prompted to enter the default startup command line switches desired 
  254.       (remember to save the configuration file).  Then, when the program 
  255.       is started NEXT TIME, it would work as if all the specified 
  256.       switches were placed at the command line.  For example, setting the 
  257.       CMdStr parameter to: 
  258.  
  259.         /VM /E /RA
  260.  
  261.       would, next time, start the program using virtual disk memory, with 
  262.       EGA graphics enabled and the Round Absolute option ON (see earlier 
  263.       section for command line switches). 
  264.  
  265.       Note that ANY command line switches, specified when starting the 
  266.       program from DOS, are ignored if a CMdStr string has been defined.  
  267.       The only exception is the /CFG  command line switch (which is also 
  268.       ignored if placed in the  CMdStr parameter string). 
  269.  
  270.  <E>  A new menu option "None" was introduced under the "/PrintTo, 
  271.       Printer, Options, Pitch" menu.  This allows the user to disable the 
  272.       pitch control codes, normally sent to the printer, when using 
  273.       generic print drivers. 
  274.  
  275.  <F>  A new dimension of capabilities was given to the @USER defined 
  276.       functions.  In earlier versions, these functions could only return a 
  277.       value.  In this new implementation, user defined functions are 
  278.       capable of returning a string result as well. 
  279.  
  280.  <G>  A new video mode was implemented (CGA 40x25) for users experiencing 
  281.       trouble reading fine print.  This feature is something that many 
  282.       visually impaired users would welcome. 
  283.  
  284.  <H>  A new function was introduced, @MEMAVAIL which returns the 
  285.       number of bytes of memory available at the time of call, 
  286.       as follows:
  287.                  @MEMAVAIL(0)  -  TOTAL memory available
  288.                  @MEMAVAIL(1)  -  CONVENTIONAL memory available
  289.                  @MEMAVAIL(2)  -  EMS/VM memory available.
  290.  
  291.  <I>  PICKLIST macro was modified to handle entries up to 21 characters.
  292.  
  293.  <J>  A significant modification to the EMS/VM model will permit a 
  294.       larger number of formulas (linked cells) in a worksheet.  The 
  295.       modifications resulted in a more robust model that will 
  296.       correctly intercept memory allocation errors, out-of-memory 
  297.       conditions, etc.
  298.  
  299.  <L>  A modification was made to Print, View to correctly display 
  300.       condensed print and wider than 80 column pages.
  301.       
  302.  <N>  /Sheet, Text commands will now start from the current cursor 
  303.       location, rather than from the upper left corner of the worksheet, 
  304.       unless a range is specified by the user.
  305.  
  306.  <O>  A new, powerful function was introduced that allows the user to 
  307.       sum a range while multiplying it by another, range. 
  308.  
  309.                   @PSUM(Range1,Range2)
  310.  
  311.       Every element in Range1 is multiplied by the equivalent element in 
  312.       Range2, and the products are summed.
  313.  
  314.         ex.    @PSUM(a1..a3,q5..q7) = a1*q5 + a2*q6 + a3*q7
  315.  
  316.       Range1 and Range2 should be of the same length, or else an ERR 
  317.       condition will be returned by the function.
  318.  
  319.  <P>  A modification to the /File, Retrieve module has resulted in 
  320.       speeding-up the Linking process by 2 to 26 times!  
  321.  
  322.  <Q>  A modification was made to allow proper operation of the PSETUP.EXE 
  323.       addin program (Version 2.0), for non-standard graphics printers. 
  324.       PSETUP.EXE Ver. 2.0 and PSETUP.DOC may be downloaded from our BBS.
  325.  
  326.  <R>  An adjustment was made to the placement of the Y-Axis label in PIC 
  327.       files generated by the program.
  328.  
  329.  <S>  A new command line switch (/DW) was introduced that forces the 
  330.       protected cell color ON when a Range, Lock command is executed, 
  331.       whether Sheet, Global, Protection is enabled or disabled. 
  332.  
  333.  <T>  A new command line switch (/NW) was introduced that changes the 
  334.       boundary values for the Data, Bin operation.  Without this command 
  335.       line switch, the criterion used for assigning a sample to a bin is:
  336.  
  337.            Limit1 >= Value < Limit2 : Value placed next to Limit2
  338.  
  339.       If the command line switch /NW is used, then the criterion is:
  340.

  352.  <U>  An error was corrected that would permit the numeric results (but 
  353.       not the labels) of a Data Regression operation to be inserted in 
  354.       protected cells.

  356.  <V>  The {BS} (backspace) macro was modifies so that it now works as 
  357.       expected when an argument is supplied, e.g., {BS 3}, {BS 12}, etc., 
  358.       for multiple backspacing.
  359.  
  360.  <W>  A modification was made to allow the program to read WKS/WK1 files 
  361.       with non-standard value records created with other programs (i.e., 
  362.       stock  files downloaded from some PRODIGY services).
  363.  
  364.  <X>  The internal length for a single formula was increased to 240 
  365.       characters and internal stack was changed to increase the 
  366.       maximum number of level of operations, in a single formula,  
  367.       from 20 to 60.

  369.  
  370.       Modifications/New Features in Ver 5.01d 
  371.       ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  372.  <1>  The @VTABLE and @HTABLE functions have been significantly 
  373.       enhanced so that they now accept String Criterion arguments. 
  374.  
  375.  <2>  A new command line switch was introduced /NR.  If the program is 
  376.       started with this switch, the program is forced to manual 
  377.       recalculation mode and Recalc linking does not take place.  The 
  378.       result is significantly decreased time for loading complex 
  379.       worksheets.
  380.  
  381.  <3>  The /Graph, Plot routine now checks to see if a 15k RAM buffer 
  382.       can be established for the plotting and gives an appropriate 
  383.       error if not. 
  384.  
  385.  <4>  A modification was made to the Colwidth, Border & Window menus so 
  386.       that pressing the down arrow correctly cycles through them (the 
  387.       first menu entry would be skipped in earlier versions).
  388.  
  389.  <5>  The program was changed to permit mouse (left/right) scrolling 
  390.       when vertical windows were activated. 
  391.      
  392.  <6>  A correction was made to restore the Video Text mode when the 
  393.       program returns to DOS if it was started with the /P switch and 
  394.       the ASEASY.MNU file was not found. 
  395.           
  396.  <7>  An error message is now displayed if a the user tries to 
  397.       overwrite a protected cell and /SGP is Enabled.
  398.  
  399.  <8>  The program was modified so that protected cells now cannot be 
  400.       overwritten with the CopyCell or MoveCell command.  The same two 
  401.       command also cannot be used to move/copy protected cells to 
  402.       another area of the worksheet.
  403.  
  404.  <9>  A modification was made to the {PICK...} macro to correct an error 
  405.       that might sometimes return high bit ASCII characters if a value 
  406.       was included in the pick range, rather than a string. 
  407.      
  408.  <10> The program was modified to correct a situation where single 
  409.       cell absolute references would always default to single cell 
  410.       ranges.
  411.  
  412.  <11> A limitation of allowing only about 100 points for an area graph 
  413.       was eliminated.  Area graphs are now generated in strips of 50 
  414.       data points each, with multiple (20) such strips allowed.
  415.  
  416.  <12> Border selection is NOT permitted if horizontal or vertical 
  417.       windows are active.
  418.      
  419.  <13> The number of dBASE fields that can be used in Importing and 
  420.       Exporting data was increased from 64 to 128.  In addition to 
  421.       that, an error message is now displayed if the number of fields 
  422.       is greater than 128. 
  423.  
  424.  <14> Screen blanking may now be activated even when the borders are 
  425.       suppressed.
  426.      
  427.  <15> The color scheme saved in the ASEASY.CFG file now becomes the 
  428.       default when changing the video mode.  (In earlier versions, a 
  429.       built in color scheme would always be the default when changing 
  430.       modes).  Note that the CFG colors are only set when the program 
  431.       is first started.
  432.  
  433.  <16> The function keys (bottom of the screen) may now be selected 
  434.       using the mouse. (Audible indication that key was selected).
  435.      
  436.  <17> Macro argument separator is now the same as the separator 
  437.       character set by the user under /User, Install.
  438.  
  439.  <18> @CASE function will no longer return ERR, unless the ERR is the 
  440.       condition returned by the selected element.
  441.       
  442.  <19> HLOC graph bars & tick marks were improved for printing.
  443.  
  444.  <20> Any key pressed while viewing a /RAO screen will now return you 
  445.       to the user mode. (Double scan code keys would place you in the 
  446.       edit mode in the past).
  447.       
  448.  <21> Pressing ESC will halt screen draw when a graph is being 
  449.       generated.  Useful to interrupt screen I/O when displaying graph 
  450.       with large number of points.
  451.  
  452.  <22> A modification was made to permit the 'Div' parameter to be 
  453.       treated as a 'Skip' parameter for non-functional graphs.
  454.      
  455.  <23> A modification was made to correct a display transition error 
  456.       that would occur from 35-40 data points when displaying a bar 
  457.       graph. 
  458.  
  459.  <24> An error was corrected that would sometimes result in the /Data, 
  460.       Sort command not operating correctly if 3 or more sort criteria 
  461.       were specified.
